I used the Dialog Editor to scale the dialogs automatically in my
Windows 95 WINHELP file (WINHLP32.EXE file). When I open the search dialog
in a HELP file, the Display, Print, and Cancel buttons are superimposed
over the list of files. What happened?
A few dialogs use several overlays to create a dialog. WINHLP32.EXE
is the most obvious of these. When you automatically scale this type of
dialog box, Qualitas Q.E.D. enlarges dialogs that have list boxes, but
not others that may lie over or under the list box. If you see a dialog
where the color ends before the bottom of the dialog or the buttons seem
misplaced, it is likely that this is a dialog that uses several overlays
to create the dialog. Use the dialog editor to edit the other dialogs to
match the dialog that has been resized or choose not to automatically rescale
the dialogs in the file.
The already edited WINHLP32.EXE dialog is available on the Qualitas FTP site. Rather than editing the file yourself, you can just download the already modified .QED file unzip the file and place it into your QED directory.
I installed a new program on my system and now Q.E.D. no longer works.
What's wrong?
The most likely reason for this is that the new program overwrote the
DLL files that Q.E.D. uses to change the dialogs. Some programs may mistakenly
update these files rather than first checking for a more recent file.
You can resolve this problem by reinstalling Qualitas Q.E.D. Run SETUP from the Program Group or the original diskette.
Some of my programs don't have the enlarged dialogs provided by Qualitas
Q.E.D? Why not?
Q.E.D. automatically resizes dialogs for programs that properly use
the Windows common dialog DLL. Programs that do not use the common DLL
are not automatically resized. Many of those that do not use the Windows
common dialog DLL store their dialogs in program files in a format that
Qualitas Q.E.D. finds when you search through the .EXE and .DLL files.
You can customize the dialogs for these programs with the Q.E.D. Dialog
Editor. Just click on the Dialog Editor button on the main Q.E.D. screen
and follow the tips to get yourself going.
There are a few programs that use proprietary methods to display dialog boxes. They do not use the Windows common dialog DLL and the dialogs are not kept in the program files in a format that is usable by Q.E.D. Microsoft's Word and Excel are among this type of program. Enhancements for these programs are being considered for future versions of Qualitas Q.E.D.
I customized a file and saved it, but the changes don't show when
I run the dialog.
Some Windows programs may require that you restart Windows in order
to use the new dialog. If a file is in use when you are making changes,
it's likely that you'll have to restart Windows. As an example, if you
edit a dialog in SHELL32.DLL (Windows 95), you need to restart Windows
to see the changes. This is because SHELL32.DLL is open and in use while
you are editing the files.
Windows 3.1x doesn't restart when I click on the Restart Windows
button at the end of SETUP.
You may sometimes encounter this problem because Windows 3.1x does
not provide a means to copy files at the next Windows startup. The SETUP
program needs to go to DOS to replace files that cannot be replaced while
Windows is running. Setup tries to exit to DOS, copy the files, and then
restart Windows. In Windows 3.1x, the SETUP program runs a special DOS
program to copy the necessary files. If Windows 3.x fails to restart when
the "Restart Windows" button is pressed, exit to DOS. Change to the directory
that you chose to install QED into and manually run the program QSEXE.EXE,
then type WIN to restart Windows. The QSEXE.EXE program deletes itself
when the task has completed.
