Qualitas Q.E.D.'s powerful Dialog Editor lets you automatically scale your dialogs to any size or change the layout of your dialogs. You can use the Dialog Editor to edit dialogs contained in any program.
Click on the Dialog Editor button on the main screen to open the Dialog Editor. When you first run the Dialog Editor, you'll see tips displayed to get you started. You can use the menu bar choices to make changes to dialogs, or you can use the icons provided on the toolbar.
The Dialog Editor allows you to change the size and layout of both common dialogs and of dialogs that do not use the common dialog DLL. The first step is to choose the file you want to change. Click on File Open on the toolbar or use File>Open from the menu to bring up the Choose (Multiple) Files dialog. This is a standard Windows browse dialog that shows all of the files in any given directory on your disk. Dialogs typically reside in .EXE files or .DLL files.
If you know the name of the file that has dialogs that you want to change, you can open that file. Otherwise, you can search for dialogs and specific text in dialogs by using Find from the menu or the toolbar. When you choose a file that contains dialogs, all of the dialogs within the file show in a dialog list window.
Changing the size of your dialog boxes is the quickest way to see results in the Dialog Editor. This is known as scaling dialogs. For programs that do not use the Windows common DLL, you can automatically or manually scale dialogs from within the Dialog Editor. After choosing a file that you want to customize, the Q.E.D. dialog list appears. You can automatically scale all of the dialogs in the file or you can select and scale a single dialog.
You can scale all of the dialogs within a chosen file by selecting all the dialogs and then clicking on Autoscale selected dialogs from the menu or the toolbar. All dialogs that use vertical and hrizontal scroll bars are automatically scaled. Names of the changed dialogs now appear in italics for easy identification. Those that do not appear in italics have not been automatically scaled because they do not have a list box with a vertical or horizontal scrollbar.
Select the name of the dialog from the dialog list that you want to scale by clicking on it. Choose Autoscale Selected Dialogs from the toolbar or from the menu. The title of the changed dialog changes to italics -- this allows you to easily identify which of the dialogs have been changed. If a dialog does not scale automatically, it's because it does not have vertical or horizontal scroll bars. You can use the directions below to scale a dialog manually.
Select the name from the dialog list that you want to scale by double-clicking on it or by single-clicking and choosing Edit Dialog from the toolbar or the menu. The selected dialog appears in an editor window. Each dialog is identified by a number and the file name in which it is located. Slide controls are provided for easy resizing. Use the slide controls to adjust the size of the dialog box.
Keep in mind that only dialogs that have horizontal or vertical scrollbars can be resized with slide controls. You can resize dialogs without list boxes by clicking on any side of the object and then dragging the boundary to the size you want.
There may be times when you want to change the layout or design of a dialog box. The Dialog Editor lets you make these kinds of changes in addition to scaling dialogs. From the dialog list, select the name of the dialog that you want to edit by double-clicking on it or by single-clicking and choosing Edit Dialog. The dialog comes up in an editor window. The title bar identifies the dialog contained in the box. (e.g., 2 of 25 in WINHELP).
You can click on any object in the dialog and relocate it anywhere else within the dialog. If you want to move a group of objects, you can draw a box around the objects. Press the left mouse button and keep it depressed to draw a rectangle around the objects. Click anywhere inside the area to move the group. You can change the size of any of the controls or of the box itself by clicking on the object and grabbing the boundary that you want to expand.
When you finish making changes to the dialog, save the changes by choosing Save File. By default, Qualitas Q.E.D. saves dialog changes within a file to a file of the same name with a .QED extension. We suggest you always use this default naming convention for your dialogs to make the files easy to track.
