This document reviews how to use the DOS files that Qualitas C.Y.A. keeps (upon your selection) as backups in the event of an emergency. Windows 95 allows you to run Windows in safe mode if there is a problem with the Windows startup files or the Registry. It is always best to use this feature restore your files from within Windows. Just choose to boot into safe mode and run Qualitas C.Y.A. to restore your files. Remember to reboot your system to activate the new files.
If you checked the Keep DOS Undo option on the Qualitas C.Y.A. configuration screen, Qualitas C.Y.A. keeps copies of your capture set in DOS each time you run a new Capture or a Restore. Qualitas C.Y.A. keeps these backups in case you can't get back into Windows in the event of a failed or interrupted restore. Keep in mind that you should first try to restore from within Windows whenever possible. With this option enabled, Qualitas C.Y.A. keeps a copy of each of the files listed in the Capture Files List on the Qualitas C.Y.A. configuration screen. The files are stored in the CYAUNDO subdirectory in your QCYA directory.
UNDO is a simple batch file that restores the files to your current files of the same name. The backup file of each of the files named in the Capture Files list on the Configuration screen is copied to the file of the same name in the appropriate directory. If you use only one version of Windows, use UNDO1 to restore files from DOS.
If you use more than one version of Windows, you have multiple UNDO batch files numbered consecutively in the order in which you installed Qualitas C.Y.A. UNDO1 for the first version, UNDO2 for the second version, and so on. You can find the correct batch file to use by looking for the QCYAINST.INI file in the Windows directory of the configuration you want to restore. Append the specified number at the end of the CYA entry in the file to the UNDO batch file. For example, you installed Qualitas C.Y.A. into a system that has version 3.11 of Windows as well as Windows 95. Assuming you installed into version 3.11 first, the Windows 3.11 directory has a QCYAINST.INI that looks like this.
[Instance] CYA1
The Windows 95 directory has a QCYAINST.INI with this entry.
[Instance] CYA2
To restore the Windows 3.11 files from DOS, type UNDO1 from the QCYA\CYAUNDO directory. The UNDO2 restores your Windows 95 files.
Due to the size and format of the Registry, Qualitas C.Y.A. does not save a copy of the Registry for DOS UNDO and the UNDO batch file does not restore the Registry. Each time Windows 95 starts successfully, it makes a backup of the Registry. These files are saved as hidden files in your Windows directory as USER.DA0 and SYSTEM.DA0. Under normal circumstances, Windows restores the Registry using its own backup when necessary. See your Windows 95 documentation for complete information how to restore the Registry from these backup files.
