Qualitas C.Y.A. FAQ

Which of my files does Qualitas C.Y.A. back up?

By default, the Capture Set for Qualitas C.Y.A. contains these files:

The Windows Registry is also included in a default configuration, though you won't see it in the list on the configuration screen.

You can add other files to your Capture Set by choosing Options/Configure from the Qualitas C.Y.A. main screen, and then clicking on the Add file button. You can type the file name in the box or use the Browse button to check your disk for files you want to include. This is a list of files that you may want to add to your Capture Set if any are relevant to your configuration.

Please keep in mind that Qualitas C.Y.A. is not meant to be used in place of a full system backup. It is designed so that you can make copies of your Windows startup files and your boot files and restore them quickly when you encounter a problem. Binary files (including those created with word processors (.doc) files can be saved, but Qualitas C.Y.A. cannot detect changes made to them. Qualitas C.Y.A. compares only ASCII text files and the Registry.

What if I update my Windows version?

If you upgrade to Windows 95 from Windows 3.1x and you keep both versions, see the question below about how to install into separate versions of Windows. If you upgrade to Windows 95 and do not keep Windows 3.1x on your system, you should reinstall Qualitas C.Y.A. from the distribution diskette so that Windows 95 can get the 32-bit version of C.Y.A. that it needs.

I have both Windows 95 and Windows 3.1x installed on my system. Can I use Qualitas C.Y.A. in both installations?

Yes. You can use Qualitas C.Y.A. in both installations of Windows. When using C.Y.A. for multiple versions of Windows on a single system, it's best to install into the same directory for both versions. Simply boot into each version of Windows and run the Qualitas C.Y.A. SETUP program from each. When asked in which directory you want to store the program files, be sure you choose the same directory for each installation.

Qualitas C.Y.A. automatically keeps the data for each installation separate by assigning an instance number for each Windows version. It keeps the information in the appropriate Windows directory in a file named QCYAINST.INI. For example, if you have installed as directed above on a system that has both Windows 3.1x and Windows 95, the Windows 3.1x directory (assuming you installed into this version of Windows first) contains a QCYAINST.INI file that looks like this.

[Instance]
IName=CYA1

The Windows 95 directory contains a QCYAINST.INI file that looks like this.

[Instance]
IName=CYA2

This results in separate sets of data files in your QCYA \CYADATA directory, each identified by the number appended to CYA in the appropriate QCYAINST.INI file. In the example above, your QCYA\CYADATA directory contains these files:

CYA1.LST
A list of the files configured as the Capture Set for Windows version 3.1x
CYA1.DAT
The description and content of each Capture Set for Windows version 3.1x
CYA1.ZIP
Archive storage for captured files and Registry changes for Windows version 3.1x
CYA2.LST
A list of the files configured as the Capture Set for Windows 95
CYA2.DAT
The description and content of each Capture Set for Windows 95
CYA2.ZIP
Archive storage for captured files and Registry changes for Windows 95

When you need to restore files for either version of Windows, Qualitas C.Y.A. checks the instance number in the QCYAINST.INI file and restores the appropriate files.

What if I want to start over with my configuration? Do I have to reinstall C.Y.A?

If it has been some time since you originally installed Qualitas C.Y.A. or if your configuration has changed significantly, it's probably a good idea to start over. You don't have to reinstall; just make a new base capture set with your current configuration. Since Registry changes are stored as differences from the base case, updating the Base Capture Set after numerous changes to your system results in more efficient operation for you as well! Before recreating the base capture set, be sure that none of your capture sets are marked as delete-protected Check your capture files list to be certain that it includes all the files that you want to save in your capture set.

To recreate your base capture set:

Select Options>Recreate Base Capture Set from the Qualitas C.Y.A. main window. A warning appears to inform you that all past capture sets are deleted from the capture set archive if you continue. Press OK to continue or Cancel to abort. If you press OK on the warning box, all past capture sets are removed from the archive. A new base capture set is created with the description that you enter.
